There is a good chance of spotting sperm whales and blue whales near the Dondra Point which is accessible from Mirissa, Galle and Hikkaduwa. However, Mirissa is the closest to spot whales. Boat trips are available daily during the peak season and leave around 7.00 am and the boat tour lasts 3 to 5 hours depending on the whale sightings.
Blue whales, Bryde´s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales, Bottle Nose Dolphins, Common Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins, Risso's Dolphins and Striped Dolphins are found in Southern Seas of Sri Lanka.
Pods of Dolphins can be seen accompanying boats frequently. Blue Whales and Sperm Whales in large numbers frequent the coastline of Sri Lanka and can be viewed near Dondra Point.
