You can slice through the ocean water and cut through the ocean air with its saltiness sweeping your hair back in the Indian Ocean. Kite Surfing, Wind Surfing, Surfing, Waterskiing, Wakeboarding, body boarding, banana ride, tube ride and jet skiing will get your adrenaline pumping high.
Wind surfing can be carried out at many places along the coastline from Kalpitiya in the West Coast to Tangalle in the South Coast. However Kalpitiya, Negombo, Bentota and Hikkaduwa are popular destinations. Trincomalee in the East Coast offers extremely good conditions for wind surfing when the south-west monsoon brings string winds.
Arugam Bay on the East Coast is the Sri Lanka's top surfing destination. Waves of the Indian Ocean with challenging breaks; it is well worth the long journey. Apart from that Mirissa, Matara and Pottuvil Point are also popular locations for surfing.
Bentota is the unofficial water-sports capital in Sri Lanka as many of the popular water-sports can be carried out there including Wind Surfing, Surfing, Waterskiing, Wakeboarding, body boarding, banana ride, tube ride and jet skiing. For beginners, calm waters of Bentota River offer an ideal training zone before heading out to the challenging Indian Ocean.
Kalpitiya is a popular place for kite surfing. The kiting season is from May to October and during the season wind blows at an average of 18 – 20 knots – 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. There is a second season from December to March, where you get 4-5 days a week windy, the wind pick up in the afternoon between 15 and 20 knots. There are well-trained and experienced instructors and certificate holders to assist.
